Many Christians today are fighting and binding demons by their spiritual name such as spirit/demon of sickness, poverty, lack, of generational curses and the list goes on to include things like satan messing with their checking accounts, marriages, work relationships, families and in every type of situation we can possibly imagine. There are spirits and demons operating in the spiritual realm that are invisible to our natural eyes. Just like I believe there are angels sent by God to fight for us, protect us and to ensure we reach the point in our lives that God intended to meet us face to face.(2 Kings 6:17)
The truth is the spiritual warfare rages within our own abilities to control our fleshly bodies as we respond to temptations, lusts, and our sins against others. We do have to wrestle with the Prince of the Air (Satan) who inherited this worldly plance when Adam ate from the fruit in the Garden of Eden. Romans 5:12“Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned” Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”
Because we are born into temptations through the flesh, what I don’t believe is giving credit to satan for every negative situation created by my own choices based in emotions, lustful sins, desires or just plain laziness then labeling it is a demon sent from hell to stop me. 1 John 4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world. 4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5 They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them. 6 We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
The reason I say we need to test the spirits and if they are from God, use this to compare your own actions and choices to what the word of God says. When you choose to quit your job out of anger, then 3 months later your still not working, nor looking for work and expect God to miraculously place money into your bank account it shows you don’t understand what the word of God truly says. Listen to this about earning your own way:
Genesis 5:29 and called his name Noah, saying, “Out of the ground that the LORD has cursed, this one shall bring us relief from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.” Psalm 90:17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands! Hosea 14:3 Assyria shall not save us; we will not ride on horses; and we will say no more, ‘Our God,’ to the work of our hands. In you the orphan finds mercy.”
As Christians we need to focus on applying the Word of God into our own situations and defining what is really our lust of the flesh (addictions, sex, drugs, etc). We have to avoid the lust of the eye (materialism, idol worship, coveting, adultery, etc) and the pride of life (arrogance, self centered, etc). Once we realize that it is not one of our own fleshly desires that we are being led astray by our self. Proverbs 5:23″He will die for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly”
Christians quote 1 Cor 16 as a warfare verse, but when you look at verse 18 you see that God was instructing us to apply self control over our own flesh. 1 Cor 16:18 ” Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body” God tells us to walk in obedience in a love relationship by Jesus Christ is the true secret to victorious living. Ephesians 2:8 “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast”. So by believing in faith that Jesus died for us, accepting Him as Lord and inviting into our life, this brings the Holy Spirit to dwell within us. It is through Jesus’ righteousness, we are able to overcome the temptations of the world and its desires. 1 John 2:16 “For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world”. As Christians, it is imperative for us to win the battle in our flesh.
So, lets break down the battle of the flesh and how it effects our spiritual walk.
First, the Lust of the Flesh is the battle of our flesh that we are born into until we enter into a walk with Jesus. Listen to Paul in Ephesian 2 starting in verse 2 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
Christians need to realize that there are not demons and spirits in every rock, bush, animal or even fellow human. Some of the issues are really nothing more than us choosing one of the 3 fleshly desires (lust, eyes, pride). Many religions in this world, past and present, embrace spirits and demons in every situation that we encounter. Much like the Greeks who worshiped many Gods during the time of the Apostles, the Native American Indians who believe the spirits inhabit creatures, plants and every living thing and can talk to their ancestors during trances. Or the Hindi who believe in reincarnation of past love ones into this life because of ancient events they can recite under hypnosis. Demonic influence is active in today’s society and even demonic possession still occurs, BUT as a believer, demonic hosts cannot dwell in the sanctity of the Holy Temple. 1 Cor 16:19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
To be victorious, remember that greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. Walk in obedience and humility always listening for God’s way before you make a choice.
