Listening Helps Us Discern Truth

Listening to others provides discernment into their lives including their passions, areas of pain and desires of their hearts. When we truly listen to others it becomes clearer what they believe and why. Research has shown that verbal communication conveys information while nonverbal body language conveys attitudes, emotions and even statements. (Heb 5:14 ESV) “ But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”

Discern the truth by studying the persons true motivations and desires so you can perceive the direction of their hearts. Jesus (Yeshua) tells us in Matthew 15:18″But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.” WOW! Psalm 5:9″Not a word from their mouth can be trusted; their heart is filled with malice. Their throat is an open grave; with their tongues they tell lies.” Psalm 17:3 “Though you probe my heart, though you examine me at night and test me, you will find that I have planned no evil; my mouth has not transgressed.” Proverbs 16:23″The hearts of the wise make their mouths prudent, and their lips promote instruction.” So how should we be? Psalm 19:14 “May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.”

When it comes to your spiritual “ears” we are to guard our minds and our hearts to what we listen to.  The type of music with lyrics do they honor God or man?  Do we read lustful books or the Holy Bible?  What we put into our bodies is what we start behaving like.  Same as our church and pastors, do they preach about Jesus Christ or do they use Jesus for their own personal fame?  John warns us to discern where we learn by holding them to Jesus in 1 John 4:1 “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.   You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spiritof truth and the spirit of falsehood.”

Pain Prevents Listening

Listening can be effected by your current pain preventing you from hearing the word spoken in truth. It may not be what you want to hear  where you are at this time in life but it may will be what you need to understand in your situation. A broken heart caused by angry words, deceitfulness, fears and past hurts can cause us to shut off the truth because it cuts like a knife.  Many of us tune out wisdom and godly counsel when our hurting is so great that we cannot “handle” any more rejection or perceived negativity.  However, it is often our own rebellion, sin and pride that prevents us from doing the right thing to resolve the situation, even when we know inside that it is what we need to do.   Our hearts become dull and cold toward our spouse, job, friends, family or others simply because we don’t deal with the issue at hand.  We try to push it down and hope it will go away on it’s own.   The sad thing is, instead of shrinking the problem this tends to escalate it to new levels.  One of the wisest men in history was Daniel, a righteous man before God who did great things in the name of the Lord.  Even he would go through tests, trials and tribulations that rocked his very world.  Daniel 12:8 “I heard, but I did not understand. So I asked, “My lord, what will the outcome of all this be?

The bible tells us that because we allow our hearts to harden, we do not hear the message of truth to Love God and then to love others with compassion, grace and mercy as God has loved you.  Ephesians 4:18″They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.” Matthew 13:15 “For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’” Mark 12:33 “To love GOD with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

Healing comes from hearing the words of truth.  Jesus came so that we could have abundant life and to set the captives free from the bandages of sin and death.  Once we realize that God has us for all eternity, the thought of this moment in time compared to a billion, trillion years is really nothing.   We need to not focus on ourselves and our situations but instead keep eternity in perspective and live a life with a purpose for all times.   SO what if they drink the last drop of juice and you wanted it right now.  Release it, do not give place to bitterness, anger or discontent.  Instead praise and worship God for all the good things He has done.  Life gets easier when you focus on the right things.

Philippians 4:7 “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

We Hear What We Want To Hear

Buddha said “Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill”  Confucius states “I hear, I know. I see, I remember. I do, I understand”  In Mark 4:9 “Then Jesus (Yeshua) said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”   After Jesus gave a story about what you sow is what you reap, His disciples asked him, what did you say?  What was your meaning behind the words that we heard?

Often, our own experiences, emotions, situations and attitudes interprets what we hear so that we only hear what we want to hear and ignore that which does not fit our own agenda, feelings or beliefs.  But the truth is still the truth and will remain the truth no matter how you wish to receive it.

Listening involves getting our own attitudes and emotions into the right frame of mind to hear what the other person is truly saying. If your mindset is negative and hopelessness all you will get is negativity and hurt. That is why it is so important to stay in a positive frame of mind, so that when you listen, you can be objective. Philippians 4:7 “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”

David tells Solomon in 1 Chronicles 28:9 “And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.”

The truth is clear, it is our interpretation that creates the confusion, trying to listen without accepting our own limitations, immaturity or lack of compassion.   We close off our minds and tune out conversations that do not give us what we think we want.   To grow in grace and mercy will often require us to change our thoughts, actions and desires to imitate Christ Jesus.   Listening leads to understanding, action and doing leads to change.

Listen to Understand, Learn To Grow

LISTENING is important in life, leadership and relationships for two main reasons, first to understand the speaker’s thoughts, feelings, experiences, understanding, relationships and beliefs. The second reason is for your own personal growth. By listening you can learn and understand how to apply the teachings from life. Prideful people talk to much because they already know everything while t

he humble seek to understand and learn about others and from them. Proverbs 18:13 “To answer before listening— that is folly and shame” Proverbs 19:27 “Stop listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge” James 1:19 “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires” It is God’s desire that you pay attention and listen in Psalm 46:10 God says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” BE ALERT, BE STILL AND LISTEN INTENTLY TO GROW IN GRACE AND MERCIES.
